Upcoming Elections

Dear Band,

I am afraid I may have misrepresented the responsibilities and work involved in the board last Thursday night and for that I am sorry. Since January, when we re-started, remarkable things have happened both musically and in the formation of the working structure of the band. Todd stepped forward with the skill set needed to set up the financial structure of the band as Treasurer. Deanna volunteered to take minutes at the board meetings to comply with the By-Laws and the laws of the Commonwealth. Mike came on board with ideas and the feet to set them in motion and connections all over the community. April was invaluable in the initial weeks of the band copying and distributing music and has given us ideas and contacts to help move things forward. Phil is our Tech Supervisor, a non-voting member of the board, established a web presence, and oversees WhatsApp, and creates Constant Contact email blasts, and a host of other things never even considered when the By-Laws were written that are so critical in the 21st Century. Jim, as Artistic Director and Conductor, simply knows half the population of Lynchburg and nearly all the musicians ! (“Oh, yeah. She was a former student of mine…”)

The structure of the board and the running of the organization continues to get better and easier to manage with the great help of all involved. One thing that all of the current volunteer board has in common is a passion for this band and all of you who play. We are looking for people with passion to join the board. Skill sets would be welcome, but that is really secondary to passion.

I wanted to clarify the upcoming elections for you. Upon re-reading the By-Laws, the general membership of the band will elect 7 Board Members.

The new board and the old board will then elect officers from the newly elected board members.

We have four currently serving board members who are willing to stand again. The officer position for which they are willing to serve is shown in parenthesis.

Steve Aiello (President)

Mike Reeves (Vice-President)

Todd Jennings (Treasurer)

We have one young woman who has expressed an interest in running for the board and has indicated she might be willing to serve as Secretary

Rhea Giorgelli

We have just appointed Flynn Van Fleteren as librarian who brings with him the skill set he acquired as librarian for his High School band for four years. He will scan, upload, and catalog all of our music in a searchable spread sheet that will take the burden off of Jim and keep us in compliance with copy-write laws.

We have three open slots for board members. If you are interested in serving on the board please reply to me at LynchburgPops or come up to me or any of the board members after rehearsal and we will add you to the slate.

This has been an exciting week with the Community Market program and Picnic on Saturday, another wonderful and productive board meeting on Monday night and two major sponsorships secured for upcoming programs and a new structure for advertising in the future. You will hear more about this soon.

Please consider being part of the inner workings of the band. I can truly say, serving you as president has been an incredibly exciting and rewarding learning experience. Be part of it!

Steve Aiello, President
